Shea Butter

Okay, so 2 weeks ago I ordered a tub of raw organic Shea Butter from Africa.....Wow!!! It has far surpassed what I was expecting.....The butter arrived in a clear plastic tub and looked like some form of puddy or paste with a light yellow color. I couldn't wait to stick my hand down in the tub and scoop up a big glob and slather it all over my skin, and scoop away I did. I absolutely love it!!! I have to ask myself ,"why haven't I been using this product for the last 20 years"??????!! I can't get enough of it...

Shea Butter is extracted from the Shea-Karite tree in Africa, which doesn't even bear fruit till after 15 years, and some trees take up to 30 years to bear a quality crop that has a high quantity of irremovable fatty acids.
The fats are what give the butter it's amazing unique healing properties and makes it superior to coconut butter or other vegtable butters.

Shea Butter nourishes the skin with vitamin A and E and F. These vitamins help with any sun damage and it helps with premature wrinkles and facial lines. Vitamin F acts as a skin rejuvenator and protector. It soothes chapped, dry, rough skin, and adds an incredible softness. This is due to the high content of unsaponifiables (a type of fat).

I normally use olive oil on my skin, but now that I have my hands on this raw organic Shea Butter, my life is going down a new road. Ahhhhhhh.....I am so excited about my new find.

I put the butter on my skin twice a day. You will have to get used to the thickness of the butter, it's really more like a paste than a butter. I put it on at night and my skin is so supple when I get up in the morning.
(I only put it on my face at night, because it is too thick for me for daytime.)

O and I forgot, the 1 lb tub that I ordered only cost me $6.15 plus shipping. Now that's a bargin!!
I ordered it through Amazon from Renee's Online Store. I will have to say that it does take a couple of days to ship after you place your order, but be patient if you order some from this site, you will get your product.

So if you have dry skin, or just need a moisturizer that really moisturizes, try it and see what you think. Now, it does have a distinct scent, but I have gotten used to it.

Don't take my word for it, go ahead and get some, and see for yourself...then let me know.

Until next time,

Jan

  1. Shea butter is amazing! I just started using it a few days ago and was telling my friend, Olivia who sent me a link to your blog. It is far superior to any moisturizer I have ever used. I also think it has helped to reduce the darkness of a few scars.

  2. Hey Ash,
Thank you so much for sharing. I am so happy that you love it as much as I do. I haven't used it during the winter months yet, but I know that it will far surpass anything I have ever used.
    Thanks again, Jan

  3. Hi Jan :)

I just discovered your blog through pretty in pink Megan. I love fashion blogs (they help me unwind in my spare time) but I'm so grateful I found your (and other blogs you follow) through Megan's blog! I've been "gently introduced" (brainwashed haha) to vitamins, minerals and healthy foods by my mom. I started appreciating her advice only after I moved for college.

Raw food diet seems extreme to me (I'm very intrigued by it though). I'm saying this because there is nothing I appreciate more than warm soup from Whole Foods when I don't have time to cook. I read ALL your posts in one day and even looked up recipes for raw food dieters and encountered something called the "dehydrator" (not sure I'd ever be able to eat dehydrated stuffed mushrooms instead of grilled ones). I'll have something to share with my mom next time I speak to her for sure.

I've been meaning to go on a detoxifying diet just to clear out my system; my yoga instructor recommended master cleanse (I'm sure you're familiar with it, you just drink lemonade made of water, lemon, cayenne pepper and maple syrup for 10 days at least). I am still in the process of mentally preparing myself not to eat at all and get my energy from maple syrup in lemonade alone (I'm a hardcore coffee addict and I love chocolate!)

    I was wondering:

    1. What does your day look like meal-wise? What's for breakfast, lunch, dinner? (I hope you don't mind me asking)
    2. I run and go to boot camp classes ( I can't stand the gym) and I take hemp seed protein shake (as a source of globular proteins) afterwards. Is that considered processed as well, do you just buy hemp seeds and mix them with food?
    3. How long did it take you to switch to raw food? (it's taking me months to get ready just for a quick master cleanse...)
    4. Just curious: what exactly is Kundalini yoga? I've been doing ashtanga and Iyengar (they're different when it comes to flow but I NEED them both) but I've never heard of Kundalini yoga before. I swore I'd never try Bikram yoga because, as my very first yoga instructor once said, "put a dog in a hot room and he'll run away. It's unnatural" :)
    5. Anything you would recommend for brittle nails?

Thanks for taking time to write this blog and share information, much appreciated!

  4. Hi San Francisco CA,

Thank you so much for writing..O where to start-
Well, I thought you would like to know that Megan is my daughter in law-I dearly love her-she is awesome!!
Yes I am aware of the master cleasnse...I did it several years ago, but I only made it 6 days.
For me it was pretty tough....I would choose colonics over the master cleanse for myself.
I have been working towards eating raw for quite a few years...I changed to eating a vegetarian diet 10 years ago, but I continued to eat grilled or baked fish if I wanted some sort of meat. Then about 7 years ago I elimated dairy...so moving on over to raw wasn't that difficult for me. It has been a work in progress.
When I started on the raw diet I needed to loose about 25 lbs, so this is the road that I went down.
When I first started moving towards the raw diet I juiced twice a day and then ate raw vetetables, salads, and sometimes a piece of salmon or tuna at night. Because I wanted to loose weight I did the juicing twice a day.
Now that I have lost the weight I do a super food smoothie in the morning and a raw vegetable juice in the afternoon. For dinner I usually do a meal from one of my raw food recipe books.
Eating raw is something that you work towards..it is just a process of elimation. Then you get hooked on all this amazing great raw food. You feel better, look better and act better. Your skin glows and your body is constantly detoxing. You feel lighter, happier and in balance.
I use the dehydrator for my nuts, and crackers and bread.
I have also done ashtanga, hatha, vinyasa, and Iyengar yoga.
But I have been doing Kundalini for the past 2-3 years. It is one of the oldest forms of yoga, that integrates breath, movement, kriyas, and meditation. You can find out a lot about it on line, and if you live in San Fran, I would think that they have some good Kundalini studios there.
I call it the yoga of rewiring your nervous system...I absolutely love it.
So for the brittle nails, you might want to increase your oils, olive, coconut, avocado, and your protein intake through blue green algae and spirulina. Also bee pollen for b vitamins. I have also read biotin helps but have never talked to anyone that has used it for that.?
Well I hope this answers your question. Please keep stopping by, I love hearing from my readers.

  5. Hi again :)

You're not wrong about yoga studios in San Francisco-prob more locations than Starbucks shops (j/k) Hatha yoga was my introduction to yoga, it was a perfect preparation for Ashtanga (I didn't expect to build muscle from yoga but Ashtanga is all about strength). Ashtanga is very dynamic and Iyengar seems like the opposite-lots of stretching, not much flow. I looked up Kundalini but I don't think I can learn much about it until I actually attend a class. How long is the class/what is the usual sequence if you don't mind me asking?

I read about your colonics experience and that's exactly why I asked you about Master cleanse ( it seemed like an easier thing to do?).

So, you have only one "proper" (non-juice or smoothie) meal a day? I guess you have to make sure you add spinach, broccoli etc in your morning smoothie to get enough fiber to fill you up? I read somewhere that people who practice yoga eat slow and I didn't believe it until I realized it took me 20 minutes to eat a 6" sandwich and that was me eating faster than usual. I'm pretty sure that yoga practice influenced you (and many other people) to eat healthier. It's happening to me, I just CARE about what I put into my body.

Ooops, I didn't mean to leave another long post (I had an excuse for my first one-my mom and her healthy ways!) I'll keep checking your blog, thanks again for advice!
