Toxins in Skin Care Products

I ran across this post from Livestrong on toxins in skin care products and wanted to pass it on.

 Statistics
The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit research organization focused on protecting public health and the environment, found that over one-third of all personal care products contain at lease one ingredient related to cancer. Many skin creams and lotions boast of having "deep moisturizing" qualities. In fact, 57 percent contain penetration-enhancing chemicals--these chemicals push the harmful toxins in the product faster and deeper into your skin and blood. A product survey conducted by the EWG in 2004 revealed that more than 25 percent of all women and one in every 100 men use at least 15 products daily that could contain toxins and carcinogens.

T0XIC CHEMICALS

According to Northwestern Health Sciences University, butylated hydroxytoluene is found in moisturizers, bar soap, shaving products, deodorants, facial cleansers and body wash and is used to slow the time it takes for products to change color. It is an eye and skin irritant. Cocamide DEA/lauramide DEA is a foaming and cleansing agent found in acne treatments, baby wash, body scrubs and moisturizers. It can create carcinogenic compounds and is linked to certain types of cancers. Formaldehyde is found in antiperspirants, soap, shampoo and shaving products and is considered a human carcinogen. It can damage DNA and has been banned by the European Union. Parabens are found in these products and may impair fertility and cause skin irritation, rashes, and allergic reactions. Studies have found parabens in breast tumors. Talc is a toxic chemical found in many powder products and is a proven carcinogen linked to ovarian cancer.

Organic

You may assume that products with the word "organic" on them are safe to use, but they may still contain synthetic chemicals. Rosie Ward, director of health and wellness at Northwestern Health Sciences University, attributes this to the lack of government regulation. "Many companies continue to mislead and confuse consumers by labeling personal care products as 'natural' or 'organic' when they contain just one or two highly processed botanical extracts and the rest is synthetic chemicals." The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has certain requirements for an "organic" label. In order for a food to be labeled "100% Organic" it must contain only organically produced ingredients. To be simply "organic" it must consist of 95 percent organically produced ingredients; and to be labeled "containing organic ingredients" it must have 70 to 95 percent organically produced ingredients. The FDA has no such requirements when it comes to skin care products.

Myths

You may think you are protecting yourself by buying a more expensive product, however the EWG found that the five facial moisturizers that cause the most concern cost $12.48 more per oz. than the five moisturizing products that pose the least concern. Another myth is that this is a concern for only women, when in fact men's hair color products, after-shave lotions and colognes are among the products associated with the greatest safety concerns. Lastly, people believe that since they are using the products in small amounts, they are not harming their health. However, using a small amount of products on a daily basis adds up over long periods of time.

Suggestions

Since you can't rely on the government to protect you by regulating skin care products, you have to educate yourself. Ward suggests avoiding synthetic perfumes and cologne, looking for ingredients that are USDA approved as 100 percent Certified Organic, and reading labels carefully. Avoid chemical names ending in "acid" or "alcohol." Avoid anything that contains synthetic colors or fragrances, mercury or triethanolamine.

REAL RAW BEAUTY

This article explains the reason that Real Raw Beauty products were created. The products in this  skin careline can be trusted 100%. They contain no chemicals or toxins, only high grade unrefined, unfiltered Organic oils. Not only are the ingredients "grown" organic, but there haven't been any chemicals or toxins used in the extraction process of the nut or fruit. You can apply these products with confidence, knowing that you are giving your skin (the largest organ in your body) the best possible skin care. There are no words that you can't pronounce, only oils that enhance the quality of your skin, diminish wrinkles, hydrate and heal.
Pick up your current skin care line and really read the label all the way down to the tiny print. It is just as important to know what is going on your skin as it is to know what ingredients are in the foods you eat.

Friends that Inspire...

I am so fortunate to have an amazing friend who does nothing but inspire me every time we are together. We have known each other for only 3 years but it seems like 23 years. You know what I am talking about? We could go for 6 months without seeing each other and when we got together it would be as if no time had past.  She just recently decided to do a detox and cleanse. She took off
to her sister's home in CA, and spent about a month there. She and her sister worked out every day and juiced and ate high vibrational food. When she came home she was 20+ lbs lighter and full of energy and happiness. I saw her last week and she looked so full of life and a much smaller version of the woman that I had seen at the first of January. She didn't even have to talk about all the things she had been doing-it was soooo obvious.

I think I got a little lazy over the winter. I wasn't exercising as much as I like. And somehow when you live somewhere that is overcast and raining most of the winter you convince yourself that it is okay not to push yourself the way you do when it is warm and sunny outside.
When I went to visit her last week all of that changed. She lives in this neighborhood that has hills that are so steep it's like hiking straight up the side of a mountain. She took me on a 4 1/2 mile hike the 3 days I was there,up and down, up and down for an hour and 13 minutes. But it was so awesome to be sore and feel the effects of pushing yourself harder than normal. She fixed incredible healthy dinners and I felt so wonderful. And we always took her dog Houli on the hikes-he was amazing, and kept us so entertained.!!

When I got home I immediately increased my running from 3 miles to 4. I felt like being with her gave me the jump start to increase what I was doing. And I pulled my juicer out and started back juicing again.  I have mostly been doing super food smoothies for the last year and after being with her I realized how much I missed my juicer. So off to the farmers market I went on Sat and bought 2 types of Kale, orange beets, apples and carrots. Juice that with lemons and ginger and you will be addicted!!

You know that you have an amazing friendship when you only want the best for your friend. I was so happy for her that she had put in the time, effort and dedication and reaped the results. I don't think I have ever seen her look better. She is beautiful on the inside and out!

If you are blessed to have an amazing inspiring friend-let them know how special they are, and how much they mean to you. My experience with friends is that you only get a few really good ones, actually I could count on one hand my really good friends. So let them know they are important.
Thank you Nancy for being a wonderful Inspiring, gracious, kind friend! I love you!

Wrinkles

So what is the real deal on wrinkles? Why do we get them? Can do we prevent them and how do we diminish the ones we have? The cosmetic industry has turned this one little subject into a multi-billion dollar a year industry. Everywhere you look you are bombarded with commercials telling you how to improve this little issue. The other day in a matter of 1 hour there were 5 commercials addressing this issue, mainly emphasising plastic surgery as the answer.

There are many reasons why a person could have wrinkles. Too much sun exposure, hormone changes stress, dehydration and improper diet. But one of the biggest contributors to wrinkles is free radicals. (A little biology) Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules that have only one electron instead of two. Because electrons are found in pairs the molecule must scavenge other molecules for another electron. When the second molecule looses its electron to the first molecule, it must then find another electron repeating the process. This process can damage cell function and alter genetic material. Free radical damage causes wrinkles by activating the metalloproteinases that break down collagen.
So how do you stop theses free radicals? Which by the way they are in the water we drink, the food we eat and the air we breathe. So there is no real way of escaping them, but there is a way to fight them, which in turn helps fight against wrinkles. The answer is antioxidants. Antioxidants are substances that protect your cells from the effects of free radicals. Where can we get these important antioxidants?
Antioxidants are found in many fruits, blueberries, pomegranates, and apples just to name a few. They are also found in carrots and my favorite dark chocolate and red wine!
You can also take supplements with high antioxidants. My two favorites that I personally take are
Astaxanthin and Sea Buckthorn Berry.

Both of these I get from Amazon.

Not only can you fight free radicals from the inside out, but you can put antioxidants directly on your skin.
Real Raw Beauty products are not only made from virgin organic oils, but they are full of antioxidants to help diminish fine lines and wrinkles and aid in the healing of damaged skin.
Our Eye Serum has some of the most powerful antioxidants, Vitamin E, Vitamin C and Pomegranate oils. On our website each product page will give you a list of the oils and their benefits for your skin.
So make sure that you are making the best choices for your skin both inside and out. Know what you are putting in your body and on your body. We know that we are taking in chemicals and toxins from the air and water, which we have no control over. Why would we knowingly put them on our skin? Do your own research and find the perfect foods, supplements and skin care for your body-you owe it to yourself!!

Until next time,
Jan
